Meet the cat

Sugar

Sugar is a sweet older kitty, and prefers to drink decaf so she can have uninterrupted afternoon naps. At 12-years-old and as the oldest of three, she rules the house. She likes to take it easy, loves treats, and gives high fives for chicken! She's the perfect armrest kitty. That's where she likes to get her snuggles.

The coffee on this page is named after Sugar.

A bag of Sugar coffee

The coffee

What it tastes like.

This special decaf coffee uses a decaffeinating processing method that utilizes enzymes from the sugar cane plant to decaffeinate. The result is, less of the coffee’s natural flavor is stripped away, so you have a rich cup of coffee without the caffeine!

You'll like it if
you've been disappointed by decaf before and want one that still tastes like coffee.
Maybe not if
you want a light, delicate cup; this one leans rich and dark.

Getting it right

How we'd brew Sugar.

Our philosophy? If it tastes good, it is good. These are some of our guidelines for how to get a great cup, but don't treat them as gospel. Treat them as a suggestion.

  • We'd start hereDrip

Add medium grounds to the machine's filter basket, fill the reservoir with cold water, and hit start. The machine heats the water and drips it through the bed automatically, usually in about 5 minutes. If brew time is too fast, grind finer or add more grounds.

  • Pour Over

Place a filter in the cone, make sure to pre-wet the filter. Add medium-fine grounds, and wet them with a small amount of hot water to bloom for 30 seconds. Pour the rest of the water in slow, spiraling circles over 2–3 minutes and let it drain through.

  • Espresso

Pack finely ground coffee tightly into the portafilter and lock it into the machine. Aim for 1:3-3.5 ratio of coffee to espresso in 25-35 seconds. Grind finer to increase brew time.

Start with 1 oz of coffee per 20 oz of near-boiling water

Too weak
Add coffee before you add time. Longer brewing makes it bitter, not stronger.
Too bitter
Grind a little coarser, or let the water sit thirty seconds after it boils.
